Fred Tjardes: A Legacy of Relationships and Heart in Education

Fred Tjardes dedicated more than 30 years of his life to the Greeley-Evans School District, serving as both an educator and administrator who truly put students first. Known for his warmth, humor, and deep belief in the power of connection, Fred built his career around one simple philosophy: relationships come before everything else in education.

Fred’s influence stretched far beyond the classroom. He was famous for handing out Chico Sticks to students on their birthdays, reading stories aloud in the lunchroom, and remembering every student long after they had left his school. His ability to make each child feel seen and valued created lifelong memories for generations of students and families across Greeley.

People throughout the community still share stories of how Fred inspired them—with his kindness, his laughter, and his unwavering belief that every child could succeed when surrounded by care and encouragement.

The Fred Tjardes School of Innovation was named in his honor to carry forward his legacy and remind all who enter that education begins with relationships. Fred’s spirit lives on in every student who is known, supported, and inspired to learn with curiosity and heart.
